Fishing

There is excellent fishing to be enjoyed in and around the Lake Tekapo region. Rainbow and brown trout are prolific and you are quite likely to catch a salmon in the canals. Some of the largest fish in New Zealand are caught in our local waters – the most recent “big fish”was a 39lb trout caught in September!

You will need a New Zealand fishing license. If you would like to fish for just one day you can purchase a temporary license from Kiwi Treasures (Post Shop) in the Tekapo Village for $20.  Fishing is available all year round in the lake and in the canals however the rivers are only open from November – April.
