Lake Tekapo Walkways - be prepared
There are some lovely hiking trails in the Lake Tekapo area suitable for moderate fitness levels. Always make sure you have sturdy footwear, and are prepared for sudden weather changes. Take warm clothing, sunscreen, food and water with you.
We encourage you to collect a map from your accommodation provider or Tekapo Springs Information Centre in the village.
Domain Walk - Easy 1.5-2hrs
This easy walk starts near the riverside end of the Godley Hotel and follows a route along the lake foreshore to the camping ground and ice-skating rink on Lakeside Drive.
Mt John Summit - Moderate 1.5-3hrs
The walk up Mt John is the most popular as there is a superb cafe at the summit. After 45 minutes of concentrated exertion making your way from the Lakeside Drive carpark up along a winding tree lined track, you'll reach the Astro Cafe for a well-deserved coffee and treat. The stunning 360 degree panoramic views are a must see for any visitor to the Mackenzie. You can then make your way back down the same route or take the longer track back along the eastern face of Mt John to the lake foreshore returning to Tekapo Springs.
Cowans Hill Walkway - Moderate 1-2hrs
Starting with an easy stroll from the Main Road bridge the track wends its way alongside the river before climbing steeply up through the forest to the top of Cowans Hill. You'll be lucky to find any other people up here so you will likely have the amazing views to yourself. The track then rolls gently downhill, over the stile and out into the tussocks and tarns. You can enjoy a few quiet moments on the Lions' Seat before making your way to the Cowans Hill carpark and back along the main road to the village.
Lake George Scott - Moderate 1.5-2hrs
From the western side of the Main Road bridge you can make your way along the terraces through the larches and near the river until you come to the pretty holding lake above the the power station. Then make your way back to the Fire Station via the loop track. This walk is a photographers delight in Autumn.
Peninsula - Moderate 1.5hrs
Just north of Mt John along the Godley Peaks road there is an undulating loop track that skirts the peninsula and looks out towards Motuariki Island. Great views of the northern end of Lake Tekapo and the surrounding mountains. Be aware of weather conditions.
Pines Beach - Easy 30mins-1hr
You can access this walking area from the Lilybank Rd and just go for a gentle wander among the trees and along the beach. Or you can start at the Church of the Good Shepherd and make your way along the foreshore track to the Pines Beach forested area for an easy return trip just enjoying the proximity of the lake foreshore and wetlands area.
