Lake Tekapo Activities

Lake Tekapo is full of exciting and relaxing things to do all year round.

In summer, the lake is popular for water sports, fishing, swimming and kayaking. The surrounding area provides a range of walks and hikes for all fitness levels. Lake Tekapo also offers golf, mini golf, mountain biking and rollerblading to name but a few activities. After a long day exploring the Mackenzie District, Jenny and Peter welcome you back home at the cosy Tekapo House B&B. Finish your day with a glass of wine on the patio and watch the sun set!

In winter, we have four New Zealand ski areas close by – Roundhill Ski Area is only 25 minutes’ drive along the side of Lake Tekapo. Alpine Springs & Spa Tekapo has hot pools and day spa facilities for a day of rest and relaxation. The complex also offers snow tubing and ice skating in winter. Our Lake Tekapo holiday homes are ideal for a ski holiday, offering warm log burners and lots of drying space for your ski gear.

By night, the Lake Tekapo skies come alive, offering some of the best stargazing in the world. A dedicated team of Lake Tekapo locals are bidding to have the skies above Lake Tekapo named as a World Heritage site! Stargazing tours are available all year round.

Lake Tekapo also has an airfield which is a launching pad for scenic flights and helicopter rides.

Venture a little further and explore the Mackenzie District. Aoraki/Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain, and Mount Cook National Park are only 75 minutes away and make for a great day trip from Lake Tekapo.
